Enter our Cataract Gorge Photo Competition :: ABC Northern Tasmania

Enter our Cataract Gorge Photo Competition :: ABC Northern Tasmania

There’s nothing quite like Launceston’s Cataract Gorge in full flood.

Hundreds of Northern Tasmanians flocked to the gorge this week, cameras in hand, to watch the usually tranquil South Esk River thundering its way to the Tamar, smashing dead tree branches over jagged rocks on the way, and rising up to swallow the pool and almost the entire First Basin lawn.

If you managed to capture this rare spectacle in all its ferocity, send your photos in to abcnortherntas@your.abc.net.au or P.O. Box 201 Launceston,TAS, 7250.

Your images can be of either the most recent flood or of any you may have captured in the Gorge in the past. We’ll post your picture online and offer an ABC prize pack for the best image. Also, if you are gifted in the art of “digitally altering” your images, we’re offering an additional prize for the best image of the Gorge in flood featuring ABC Northern Tasmania’s weather correspondent and dedicated kayaker Brendan McMahon surfing the swell (or perhaps sinking beneath it!!)

Brendan confessed to ABC Northern Tasmania’s Breakfast presenter David Iliffe that he’d never be willing to kayak the Gorge after even the hint of rain, so this may be the closest he’ll ever get. Grab his image from the picture (right) and get creative. Entries close November 11, so raid your archive, or get snapping while the waters last!
