Tasmania's Australian of the Year is the man who led the Fair Dinkum Food Campaign, Richard Bovill of Don in the state's north-west.

The campaign put the issue of country of origin food labelling on the national agenda.

Mr Bovill was presented with his award by the Governor William Cox at an awards ceremony in Hobart last night.

He has described the award as a great honour and very humbling.

Mr Bovill says its also a recognition of the struggle of rural communities to remain alive and viable under price pressures from large, powerful buyers.

"We do have quite an imbalance between those who supply and those who purchase everywhere in the world now," he said.

"The buying market is dominated by very few players and there's still a large number of suppliers out there and those suppliers are basically forced into undue market pressure."
