Libs All Steamed Up Over Rail -

Libs All Steamed Up Over Rail - Bryan Green, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

The State Government says the Opposition has worked out its foggy vision for railways at a party fundraiser.

The Infrastructure Minister, Bryan Green, revealed the rail operator, Pacific National, had been forced to pay $500 a plate for a Liberal Party dinner to get a message through to the Liberal leader.

?The message seems to have been ?we want your money?, because what the Opposition has proposed so far would be just what Pacific National would want.

?It?s ridiculous that the Liberals would propose tipping money into the pockets of a huge freight corporation in the midst of a boardroom takeover battle.

?Their original announcement came without any knowledge of their Federal colleagues or approval of a $78 million offer on their behalf.

?In repeated meetings with the Federal Minister Warren Truss I?ve pressed the view that Tasmania?s rail lines would be best owned and maintained by the Australian Rail and Track Corporation as they are in most other states.

?This would allow the operation of rolling stock to be opened up to competition.

?It?s not true to say the Tasmanian Government has been anything but serious about efforts to maintain the railway system and we will continue those efforts in consideration with the Federal Government of the independent review of the rail.? Mr Green said
