Hobart Airport Redevelopment Opened

Hobart Airport Redevelopment Opened - Paul Lennon, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

The $7.4 million redevelopment of Hobart Airport was officially opened today by Premier Paul Lennon.

Mr Lennon said Hobart Airport had come a long way since it opened in 1956 and was now a truly world-class facility able to meet modern demands.

?In that first year, just over 120,000 passengers passed through the gates of our capital city airport,? Mr Lennon said.

?Last year, a record of more than 1.5 million passengers passed through the airport, travelling on more than 20,000 domestic and general flights.

?For many visitors to our State, the first introduction they have to Tasmania is the airport they arrive at and, importantly, that is the final impression people will be left with when departing Tasmania.

?First impressions count, so it's important that we make visitors feel welcome and at home.

?The substantial investment that has been made in redeveloping Hobart Airport will improve capacity, logistics, and appearance - in turn, improving the travel experience for Tasmanian passengers and visitors to our State.?

In March, the $5.4 million redevelopment of the main terminal building was completed.

This has since been complemented by a $2 million, 360-square-metre extension.

The completed redevelopment includes:

A dual station security screening point for passengers that has reduced queues at peak times; Increased capacity in the departure lounge; New-look retail outlets operated by nationally-recognised operators; and New toilet facilities.

The car park has also been redesigned to address security and traffic management issues.?This redevelopment will provide the airport with increased capacity while visitors will be greeted by an impressive new faade,? Mr Lennon said.

"The impressive growth currently being experienced by Hobart International Airport reflects the remarkable economic transformation that the State of Tasmania has achieved in recent years.

"Today, we have record economic growth, record jobs growth, record population growth, records levels of private capital investment, record levels of business confidence and record tourist numbers

?Increased air access has paved the way for the success of Tasmania's tourism industry.

?800,000 visitors are now coming to Tasmania each year, with 600,000 of them arriving by air.

?Air arrivals are growing at seven per cent-a-year and it?s important that people get the right impression of Tasmania when they land.

?In the 12 months to June, visitors directly injected more than $1 billion into the State economy - making an enormous impact on our economic well-being.

?The continuing confidence within the tourism industry is also reflected in more than $600 million in tourism-related development either planned or under construction in Tasmania.
