The Tasmanian Government has blamed a rise in participation figures for the increase in both employment and unemployment rates in Tasmania.

Bureau of Statistics figures show employment in the state rose by 3.7 per cent in November, but at the same time the jobless rate increased to 7.1 per cent.

The Government says a rise in participation figures to 64 per cent had inflated jobless figures because many people who had just started looking for work were classed as unemployed.

The Minister for Economic Development, Lara Giddings, says despite the rise in people actually finding employment, the jobless rate is still too high.

"That remains our goal that we would like to be able to bring it down to the national unemployment rate," she said.

"But in that sense we know as a government that there is more work to be done, there are Tasmanians in the community who want to work and don't have a job."
