Tasmanian Exporters Take On the World -

Tasmanian Exporters Take On the World - Lara Giddings, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures released today show Tasmanian exporters lead the nation in export growth.

Economic Development Minister Lara Giddings said the continued growth in exports is a reflection of Tasmania's strong economy and the quality of the products we offer.

?According to the ABS, the value of Tasmanian exports reached $2.708 billion in the year to October 2005,? Ms Giddings said today.

?This is an increase in Tasmanian merchandise exports of 16.4 per cent on the previous year, and is slightly stronger than the national increase of 16.1 per cent.

?Nations which took the largest increase in their imports from Tasmania are Korea, up by $67m, Singapore up by $59m, India up by $58m and China up by $50m.

?Japan of course remains our strongest trading partner.

?Tasmania's best performing export markets by country group are APEC up by $314m, Developing Countries up by $352m, the OECD up by $101m, and ASEAN up by $70m.

?The fact that Tasmanian export growth outstrips the rest of the country is a tribute to the hard work and innovation of our export businesses and the Tasmanians who work in them.

?And the fact that our exporters have earned in excess of $2 billion over the past year shows how important the merchandise export sector is to the Tasmanian economy.
