Bus drivers' strike looms. 20/01/2006. ABC News Online

asmania's public transport system is likely to grind to a halt from next week as Metro bus drivers vow to take strike action.

Metro drivers in Hobart return to work this afternoon after a stop-work meeting this morning.

Today's meeting at the Springfield Depot at Derwent Park has revealed just how angry drivers are.

Next week, they will vote in a secret ballot on a Metro pay offer of 12 per cent over three years.

Drivers want something akin to 10 per cent now.

They say $16 an hour is not enough for the difficult and often dangerous job they do.

The mood of the meeting was belligerent, with speaker after speaker calling for drivers to take action.

The Bus Drivers Union says drivers will hit Metro hard and unfortunately the public will be inconvenienced.

Metro drivers will meet in the north and north-west of the state next week.
