Congratulations Ricky The Great - Jim Cox, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

Sport and Recreation Minister Jim Cox has congratulated Australian Test captain Ricky Ponting for his masterful performance in the Third Test against South Africa.

“Hitting the winning runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground was an appropriate crowning glory for the first player in history to score a century in each innings of his 100th Test.

“His award as the player of the match and the series were also suitable accolades.

“Ricky Ponting, the boy from Mowbray, is truly an inspirational figure in a sport which places so many demands on its top players.

“After the first Test and the Ashes series in England there was some undoubted pressure on him, but he’s certainly answered any remaining critics in the best possible way.

“It was a truly heroic captain’s performance and one which firmly places R.T. Ponting alongside the World’s greatest batsmen.

“In fact by my reckoning he would already be Australia’s second greatest batsmen next to Sir Don himself.

“What’s even better is that at 31 years of age he’s at the height of his powers and we should have still many years to look forward to of being entertained by such a great exponent of the game.”
