Friends to lead new tours of Gardens - Lesley Kirby, Director - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

The visitor experience at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens has been enhanced with the introduction of guided tours by members of the Gardens’ Friends group.

Equipped with information and anecdotes about the Gardens’ history, collections, and activities, the guides offer a fascinating insight into the country’s second oldest botanic gardens established in 1818.

RTBG Director Lesley Kirby said the Gardens’ spectacular botanic features and significant heritage buildings combine to make it one of Hobart’s most popular attractions.

“Our guides are trained and accredited and their commentary will add to the enjoyment of a trip to the Gardens by both locals and visitors,” she said.

“The Arthur Wall, which is hollow and capable of being heated, is a constant source of fascination and the handsome wrought iron entrance gates and sandstone conservatory always draw admiration and spark questions.”

The hour-long tours start at 10am and cost $5 per person.

They are scheduled on January 3 -7; 10-13; 16-21; 23-25; 27, 31 and February 1, 2, 7, 8, 14, 16.

Bookings are essential. Phone the Gardens on 6236 3075.

This initiative is part of the State Government’s commitment to progressing Tasmania Together Goal 21 – Value, protect and conserve our natural and cultural heritage.
