Investigations are under way into an alleged misuse of the Tasmanian wool brand overseas.

The Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) has received reports of a well-known retailer in Germany advertising Tasmanian-made wool trousers well under price.

The TFGA has asked the State Government to investigate the claims and identify whether the product is actually Tasmanian-made.

The TFGA says some overseas retailers have been known to sell high-quality products cheaply to attract more people into the shop.

The chairman of the TFGA Wool Council, Marcus McShane, says the practice can damage Tasmania's reputation.

"If the quality is not up to scratch then it could be damaging to our reputation but also a product being put in at a low price like this, other retailers are reluctant to carry that same name and even compete," he said.
