Greens Still Not Listening - Judy Jackson, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

Greens Still Not Listening - Judy Jackson, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

Minster for Environment and Planning, Judy Jackson, has again rejected claims that there has been a breach of the protocols for the movement of Tasmanian devils to the mainland wildlife parks.

“There has not been any failure to follow protocols for the movement of Tasmanian devils to mainland wildlife parks.” Ms Jackson said.

"As I said yesterday, Tasmania has established protocols for the movement of Tasmanian devils between wildlife parks in the state and these protocols also provide the basis for negotiation of movement of devils from Tasmanian wildlife parks to mainland States.

“There is nothing to suggest that any movements have occurred outside of these protocols which were developed specifically for devils from captive populations that are considered a low risk.

“The New South Wales Government appears to be confused with discussions Tasmanian initiated within the National Animal Health Committee (AHC) in regard to the insurance population that have been established in Tasmania.

“These animals, which are held in DPIWE controlled quarantine facilities (not wildlife parks) were captured from the wild in early 2005, and do not meet the protocols for movement between wildlife parks.

“Unanimous agreement was not reached on this proposal and Tasmania elected not to proceed."
