Hidding Should Get Serious About Tax Relief - David Bartlett, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

Hidding Should Get Serious About Tax Relief - David Bartlett, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

The State Liberals should get their colleagues in the Howard Government to ease the tax burden on Tasmanians.

Labor Member for Denison David Bartlett said if State Liberal Leader Rene Hidding was serious about tax relief for Tasmanians, he would be asking the Howard Government to provide some tax relief from Peter Costello’s $11 billion taxpayer funded surplus.

“For example, for every litre of petrol that Tasmanians put into their car to travel this summer holiday, nearly fifty cents will go directly in taxes to the Howard Government,” Mr Bartlett said.

“Every time a Tasmanian puts a petrol nozzle in their car, Mr Costello puts his hand in their pocket.

“So if Mr Hidding were serious about tax relief for Tasmanians he could talk to Mr Costello about fuel tax instead of making unfunded policy announcements.

Mr Bartlett said that unlike the State Liberals, the Lennon Labor Government has a proud record of providing tax relief to Tasmanians.

"Since Labor came to power, Tasmania has gone from being the second highest taxing state to the second lowest,” Mr Bartlett said.

"And we will deliver $830 million in tax relief between 2002 and 2009.

"The Tasmanian Liberal's talk about tax relief but they have no plan.

"They have already committed to spend $800 million in election promises, but they are yet to say how they will pay for it.

"The fact that the Liberals have no plan to pay for their election promises shows that if elected, the Tasmanian Liberals will bankrupt our State again.
