Mine Fire - Bryan Green, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

Mine Fire

The Minister for Infrastructure, Energy and Resources, Bryan Green, has expressed his relief at the outcome of the mine emergency at the Avebury Nickel Project near Zeehan.

Mr Green said he shared the concern of everyone when he first heard reports of the fire at the developing mine.

“But it was a fantastic relief to hear that the three workers caught in the decline were found alive.

“I’m sure I speak for the entire West Coast Community in thanking all those involved in the emergency services for their quick and level-headed response.

“Likewise I’m certain everyone hopes this incident can be put behind us as the Avebury mine proceeds towards its commissioning.

“Nickel is enjoying a jump in demand and this project can be considered an example of the resurgence in Tasmania’s mining sector.

“The Allegiance mining company is on schedule to have its mill built and the mine developed to start operation late this year, providing another 120 jobs in the West Coast mining industry.

“Today’s incident is a reminder that mining has historically been a hazardous occupation, but by keeping to modern standards I’m confident the mine can make a positive contribution to the regional and State economy.”
