State Liberals will ask Prime Minister for Tasmania to receive vacant Cabinet position

Opposition Leader Rene Hidding today said that he would respectfully ask the Prime Minister to consider providing the vacant Cabinet spot to Tasmania, following the resignation of Defence Minister Robert Hill.

“There is no doubt that Tasmania has done extremely well under the Howard Liberal Government,” Mr Hidding said.

“However, Tasmania has not been represented at the highest level of decision making in Cabinet since the retirement of Jocelyn Newman in 2001.

“Tasmania did very well at the last Federal Election and delivered Bass and Braddon back into the Liberal fold as well as increasing our Senate representation.

“With Tasmania’s increased Federal Liberal representation it is an appropriate opportunity to rebalance the geographic distribution of Cabinet representatives South Australia, for example has four Cabinet Ministers, and Tasmania has none.

“We believe that should it become available then logically, Senator Hill's spot in Cabinet should go to Tasmania.

“Having a Tasmanian federal parliamentarian in Cabinet would ensure that Tasmania continues to do well from the Howard Liberal Government.

“We believe that Special Minister of State Eric Abetz has performed strongly and would be well qualified and well placed for a Cabinet position. Equally, our other Tasmanian Federal Liberal representatives also have the talent and could fill such a role.”
