'New era' as Tasmanian ports merge. 02/01/2006. ABC News Online

Tasmania's four ports have been amalgamated.

The merger was completed yesterday, meaning all four ports have become a single entity called TasPorts.

Infrastructure Minister Bryan Green says it signals a new era for the maritime industry in Tasmania.

"Once upon a time, each port would have been played off against each other, with respect to how those shipping lines were going to operate or where they operated from into the future," he said.

"From now on though, they will have to negotiate with one central authority if you like, with respect to how they operate to and from Tasmania."

All the staff at the four ports and their entitlements have been retained.
