Reward for identification of vandals of Aboriginal rock carvings on North-West coast - Judy Jackson, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

Parks and Heritage Minister Judy Jackson today announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the person or people responsible for the vandalism of Aboriginal rock engravings on the North West coast.

She hopes that the reward will encourage people who have information to come forward.

“This is a senseless act, that has not only scarred an extraordinary Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage site, but offends all Tasmanians,” Ms Jackson said.

Damage to the internationally significant Aboriginal rock carvings was discovered earlier this month.

Ms Jackson will also convene a management workshop, bringing together the State agencies and local management groups and communities responsible for looking after the area, to urgently consider protection measures for the Aboriginal rock carvings.

The workshop will be co-hosted by the Department of Tourism, Parks, Heritage and the Arts and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Land and Sea Council.

“Many people have expressed to me their disgust at this act of vandalism,” Ms Jackson said.

“It is vital that we work together to secure the protection of the rock carvings, and support responsible users of the area.”

People with information on the vandalism can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 005 555.
