Tasmanian Firefighters to assist with Victorian Fires - David Llewellyn, MHA - Tasmanian Government Media Releases

Deputy Premier David Llewellyn today announced Tasmania will send firefighters and equipment to help Victoria battle some of that State’s worst ever fires.

“It’s a horrific situation in Victoria, and this morning Victorian Authorities formally asked for Tasmania’s assistance.

“We will send a number of personnel and possibly up to 10 light tankers as soon as possible, probably tomorrow.

“The Chief Officer of the Tasmania Fire Service, John Gledhill assures me that Tasmania won’t be left short changed by sending some of our firefighters to Victoria.

“John Gledhill says, the forecast weather for Tasmania for the next week is looking ok however we will be able to maintain more than adequate cover should fires break out here.

“Tasmania’s personnel are likely to be deployed in forest areas, due to our Service’s obvious experience and ability in fighting those sort of fires.

“It’s a tense situation in Victoria and it’s important that as a State we do what we can to help fellow Australians in need.

“It’s expected the firefighters will relieve exhausted crews and be in action for about five days.

“We wish our firefighters well and hope that they can help make a difference in the difficult situation.”

For further information about the deployment please contact: TFS Chief Officer John Gledhill on 62308605.
