Tribute to former Master of the Supreme Court of Tasmania

Tasmania has lost a great lawyer with the death of Mr Richard Carter (Ric) Southee, a former Master of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, Shadow Attorney-General Michael Hodgman QC said today.

Mr Hodgman said he had studied Law at the University of Tasmania with Mr Southee, had appeared against him as a Barrister and before him as Master of the Supreme Court of Tasmania.

“He was a great lawyer, a man totally committed to justice, and a kind and compassionate gentleman,” Mr Hodgman said.

“I also had the honour of counting Mr Southee as a friend for over forty years.”

Mr Hodgman said that Mr Southee really loved Tasmania and had rendered great community service, particularly as Patron of the Canine Defence League and Patron of the University Football Club.

“Ric will be sadly missed. His untimely death has come as a great shock to all who know him. He really made his mark in the law and his service to Tasmania was quite outstanding,” Mr Hodgman said.
