WAITING LIST DATA STILL NOT AVAILABLE

Tasmanian Greens ...Media Release

What Is Minister Llewellyn Up To?

The Tasmanian Greens today called on the Government to either publish the Elective Surgery waiting list data for the final quarter of 2005 or explain why the figures have not been updated despite the DHHS website stating that, “this information is updated 10 working days following the end of each quarter.”

Greens Opposition Health and Human Services spokesperson Tim Morris MHA said that since reporting had begun, the usual practice was for the Elective Surgery waiting list statistics to be published by about the 14th of the month past the end of each quarter, but for some reason this time the latest figures have not been published within the usual timeframe.

“The Greens are starting to get suspicious that the Government is going to play tricks again and either change the way the Elective Surgery waiting list data is collated or reported so as to prevent the public being able to compare and measure the performance in this vital area,” Mr Morris said.

“The Government is clearly hiding the latest figures for elective surgery, presumably to cover up for their abysmal performance.”

“We are sure if the number of Tasmanian waiting for elective surgery had been substantially reduced from in excess of 7000, as reported for the September quarter, then the data would have been published in accord within the timeframe advised by the department.”

“It is now time for the Minister for Health and Human services to come clean and release the latest Elective surgery waiting lists figures in accordance with departmental policy, and explain why he has withheld them,” Mr Morris said.
