One of Australia's leading artistic directors has been hired to assess the cultural importance of Hobart's waterfront.

The Tasmania Government appointed Sue Nattrass to the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority.

Ms Nattrass is meeting with 50 different art and culture societies to find out what development they want in the waterfront area from Hunter Street to Salamanca.

"They want to be able to show what work they do, show the arts of this state and this city in the best possible way," she said.

Ms Nattrass says further consultation is planned.

"First of all we're consulting with a large number of people and then we will, out of that, develop an issues paper and then come back and consultant and talk about the issues that we've found," she said.

"Eventually a draft paper will be given and then that can be discussed and it'll be eventually on show to the public."
